The Oceanport Historical Committee began selling copies of Oceanport A Great Place To Live, the sequel to Oceanport in Retrospect, detailing Oceanport’s history in December 2022. Softcover copies are available for $40.00 cash or check made payable to the Borough of Oceanport, and hardcover copies are available for $75.00 cash or check made payable to the Borough of Oceanport. If you’re interested in purchasing a copy, please see the Oceanport Centennial Facebook page for details. Copies are also available for purchase at Borough Hall. Copies can be shipped out of town for an additional charge by the Historical Committee.
The Historical Committee has completed historical markers erected at Old Wharf Park, which was the center of town and the business district in Oceanport’s past. An application for a grant will be submitted for a new project, and the materials are being gathered for the information to be displayed on the next signs. We believe this will be a perfect addition to preserve the history of our town.
Another project the Historical Committee is working on is two display cases in the lobby of Borough Hall on Oceanport Way. The display cases have a small collection of three-dimensional items from Oceanport’s past, including items from Fort Monmouth, for display. Displays will rotate periodically.
We continue to encourage residents past and present to share photos, documents, and other memorabilia from Oceanport’s past with us. To contact a member of the Historical Committee, please check the Oceanport Centennial Facebook page, or contact the Borough Clerk’s office.
We have been discussing a project for the future which would include small, possibly rotating exhibits in some of the historic buildings on the Fort Monmouth property in Oceanport to help preserve Fort Monmouth’s history there, as well as outdoor historical markers along the public path, the Riverwalk, adjacent to Parkers Creek.
We continue to schedule the Annual 63rd Army Band concert at the end of June or early July. We have had a lot of people in attendance each year who thoroughly enjoyed this free presentation outside at Blackberry Bay on a beautiful summer evening. Look for details of upcoming events in the Oceanport Bulletin and on the Oceanport Centennial Facebook page and the Oceanport Residents Facebook page.
